Spitfires On the Ice Again

Windsor Spitfires bow headsOver two weeks ago a young man destined for the NHL collapsed in his home and died. His name was Mickey Renaud and he was the center and captain for the Ontario Hockey League’s Windsor Spitfires. I don’t watch the OHL, mainly because I can’t. I live in the US and don’t have access to that media. But I do read hockey stories and I knew of the young man’s death through the Toronto media and say Don Cherry Mention it on Hockey Night in Canada last Saturday.

The reason I bring this is up is that last night the Spitfire’s played their first game in nearly 2 weeks. From all the accounts I have read it was a very emotional night. Events like this truly put into perspective sports and their place is ones life. We say that we bleed our teams colors. We say that winning is everything. Well last night in Windsor team was everything. The accounts that I read in the National Post and the Windsor Star had me almost in tears. A touching tribute that included the traditional puck drop between captains. I can picture Mickey’s brother standing there dropping the puck with the captain of the Visiting team. However as a sign that their captain wont be replaced, Windsor sent no one to center ice. Very touching. I was so proud to see young men deal with the tragic effects of their loss as a team. A hockey team is a family and it showed last night.

Leafs beat Panthers in Shootout

Toronto 4 Florida 3 in SO.

For the past three years the Toronto Maple Leafs had opened the season with a lackluster effort. Then they win some games and loose some games. Right after the all-star break they start talking about being in contention for the playoffs. Sounds like a broken record. I am remind of the Jim Mora famous quote, “ PLAYOFFS? PLAYOFFS?” What gives? Why does a team of over paid millionaires wait until the season is almost over to start playing like a team?

Why not start from October? The reason for this rant is as soon as I start to believe in Toronto making the playoffs they will break my heart and come ever so close with out getting in. Sounds like 41 years of heartache is going to be 42. I want to “BELEAF” I really do. But loosing sucks and I don’t want to get my hopes up again. I will still be at the game on Saturday (vs Washington) watching, cheering, defending my team. Yet in the back of my mind I know it’s all for not.

NHL Trade Deadline…………

Ok.  So the Maple Leafs brought in Cliff Fletch for what reason?  To clean up a mess made by JFJ.  Great.  No news here… no acquisitions…. just moving Wade Belak, Chad Kilger, and Hall Gill.   I don’t mind most of them but I really like Kilger.  I thought he played with an intensity the Leafs need to keep.  I think they got softer.  Is the NHL draft going to be good this year?  I sure hope so cause Toronto just gave up 3 roster spots for the draft.

The Blackhawks got rid of some dead weight. Tuomo Rutto would be a loss if he wasn’t always hurt.  I guess the Hawks didn’t get anything they wanted. Only time will tell.

Blackhawks Trade Deadline: Buyers or Sellers? Both?

For the first time in about 10 years the Chicago Blackhawks could just maybe might possibly be buyers on the day of the NHL trade deadline. I mean for the past so many years they have been dumbing everything to someone else’s hope of winning the Stanley Cup. I heard rumors they wanted Forsberg, but those were unrealistic. Now the latest spin is that Brian Campbell could be moving to the windy city or better yet Brad Richards. Whatever happens its refreshing to see management try to bolster a young team and give the Kids someone to play with. It would be nice to see them move some older guys and still get better.

Mike and Mike Movie List

So I wake up this morning at 6:30 (I didn’t get out of bed but I was sorta awake.) And on my lovely radio in between the loud beeping is a discussion between Mike Goldberg and Eric whats his name about their top 5 movies of all time for the show. After carefully thinking this over on the way in to work I thought I would list my top 5. If someday someone see this they might like to comment on it.

Top 5 Movies (in no particular order)

  • The Bridge over the River Kwai
  • Star Wars V: Empire Strikes Back
  • Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
  • The Godfather
  • Monty Python and the Holy Grail

It’s tough when you really think about it. I think top 10 would be easier for me but then this isn’t about easy. If you want here is a list of IMDb’s top 250.
