I know the season is over. I know that wins don’t really matter. But when blooper reel plays happen, it is easier to smile at when your team gets the win. Just ask Vesa Toskala, goalie for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He gave up a goal last night from 180 feet away. I saw it happen and part of me knew it would go in. Until the Leafs tied the game in the third, I thought it was horrible. I wished it was Andrew Raycroft. But like injuries and bad calls, they all go down easier when you don’t loose because of them. Well it’s time to go. I hate to leave you, but I really must say, Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight. That is a memorable line from the 1955 group, the Spaniels.
And that’s the first thing that popped into my head when I watched the Maple Leafs winger Nik Antropov go down in the first 3 minutes on Saturday night. It was courageous effort by a team who’s general manger has said,” they only start to fight when nothing is on the line.” But as usual the team that underachieves in November and December rarely makes it to the playoffs in April.
When Mats Sundin was not in the lineup at the start of the game vs Buffalo, you had to know in your gut that the Leafs had hit a wall. Then Antropov (the team’s second leading scorer behind Sundin) leaves with a knee injury. Other guys can score, sure. But when your emotional leader is in the press box, it’s tough for this team of average hockey players to find someone to lead them. Tomorrow the team plays Long Island and is expected to miss both Sundin and Antropov. I say start Andrew Raycroft and put in a bunch of the kids.
Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight

Happy St. Patty’s Day! (3 days early) Thought I would change it up a bit. Below is a song done by a great Irish/American band The Young Dubliners, “Foggy Dew“.
It is put to pictures of the Easter Rising in Dublin, Ireland of 1916. The rising was a rebellion by a combination of Irish patriots opposed to British rule. The rebellion failed after a week of fighting and sixteen of it’s leaders were executed by British firing squads. Despite this defeat, the Easter Rising led to another rebellion or Guerrilla War in 1919 which finally led to Irish independence in 1921.

So you take away the captain and motivational leader of the Toronto Maple Leafs. You expect the bench to fall apart. But not this team, this night. The Leafs’ hero was Pavel Kubina. He was the hero the night
before and last night he did it in regulation. So the Leafs slim playoff dream is still going. The club is 5 points out of the 8th spot with 10 games left. I don’t have much more to comment other than it sure would be nice but I refuse to get my hopes up.

At 8:30pm last night I said goodbye to a horrible hockey season. A season full of underachievers falling to live up to expectations. I watched the Philadelphia Flyers score their 3rd goal and take a 3-0 lead with less than 20 minutes left in the Leafs’ pitiful season. I went downstairs to commiserate with my roommate and get some food. The game was being Tivo’d, so I could watch the potential fights later. Then after some idle conversation I decided to watch the rest of the last rights ceremony.
What the hell did I miss? A team that I know won’t make the playoffs decided to mount an unexpected comeback? Where was this “we’re not going to lay down and die” attitude in October? Don’t get me wrong it was exciting. Great fire and work ethic in the final period. And pulling Toskala with 1:55 to play for a 6-4 advantage was thrilling. Scoring that goal in overtime made me jump off the couch. But wait a minute! They were dead. I said goodbye. I was ready for the funeral. Now they have a pulse?
I personally would rather have a quick death. You want your loved ones to be around but you don’t want them to suffer. Leaf fans right now are suffering. Will tonight be the end?
